Garage Door Safety

Garage
door is the largest moving object in the house. These doors are
operated by electric door openers. Proper installation,
operation, maintenance, and testing of the garage door and
automatic opener are necessary to provide safe
operation.
An improperly adjusted garage door or automatic opener can exert
deadly force when the door closes. This could lead to serious
injury or death from being hit by a closing garage door or from
being trapped under the door. |

Garage Door Opener
The garage door opener is a separate component of your
garage door system. Openers vary in horsepower and chain
options. It is essential to match the size and weight of
your garage door with the correct opener is critical to
get the ultimate performance and safety of the entire
door system. |
|
Garage Door Opener
Safety Tip
Since 1993, federal law
requires that all residential garage door openers sold
in the United States must include photoelectric eyes or
a sensing edge as an additional protection against
entrapment. The law also requires that, should the
sensors become inoperative, the opener will not
function. Garage door openers without these safety
devices are dangerous and should be replaced. |

|
Corner Brackets
Corner brackets are the two brackets attached to the
lower left and lower right corners of the door. The
cables that lift your garage door are typically attached
to these brackets. |
|
Garage Door Corner Brackets
Safety Tip
These cables are under high
tension and, if disconnected, the brackets could fly
dangerously. Only an experienced technician should
service these brackets |

|
Extension Springs
Garage doors are usually balanced by either torsion
springs or extension springs. Extension springs are
normally mounted just above the horizontal track,
perpendicular to the closed garage door. They provide
the door's lifting power by stretching and extending.
Because extension springs operate independently from one
another, achieving smooth and balance operation is more
difficult. Therefore, we do not recommend using
extension springs except for extremely low headroom
applications. |
|
Extension Springs
Safety Tip
When your garage door is
down, extension springs are under high tension. If the
spring breaks, it may cause injury. If an extension
spring breaks, broken spring parts may fly around that
garage, potentially causing injury. If your garage door
has extension springs, you need a safety cable that runs
through the spring and is secured to the wall or ceiling
at each end. If you have extension springs but do not
have a safety cable, call us for a safety inspection.
Only an experienced technician should service garage
door springs. |

Torsion Springs
Torsion springs are much more common than extension
springs, and come standard with all IDC installations.
Torsion springs are usually mounted above a closed door,
parallel and horizontal to the top section of the door.
They provide lifting power for the door by winding and
unwinding while the door is opened and closed. |
|
Torsion Springs Safety
Tip
The torsion spring is under
high tension and requires special tools for adjustment.
Do not attempt to repair or adjust torsion springs
yourself. Because of the high tension, the torsion
spring and any part associated with the counterbalance
system should be adjusted only by a professional. These
parts include: the springs, the cables, the corner
brackets attached to the cables, the cable drums, and
the center bearing bracket that holds the torsion spring
shaft. IDC's service technicians are highly trained and
ready to help you. |
